Cold, wet but not so miserable – a night on a bike

Barry Sandland/TIMB - Finger protruding through a blown tire

“Here is my night as a messenger. Riding through the city to a client and ‘bam’, I blew a massive hole in my tire. Big enough for a finger to slip through. I hate flat tires but we all carry spare tubes. But not always spare tires. Then you are pressed for time, it is dark, the weather is cold and wet, the entire situation is miserable and you have lots of work right now. Here is why you ride with messengers. One guy loaned me his bike for the night. A second rode back from a bike shop with a spare tire so I could get home on my own bike at the end of shift. It’s nice to be with people who will be there for you when you need help.”
