Zombies are like bacon, they make everything better

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Eddy Merckx as my favourite zombie. Given his nickname, it seems appropriate. I mean, if they can do it to Jane Austen…

Eddy Merckx amongst the unliving. What could be better as I prepare to watch the season opener of The Walking Dead tonight. And we finally get to see Negan’s brutal choice in his smiling, psychopath introduction. Barring one or two core characters, just about anybody else is a target. And TV shows like The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones have discovered the audience loyalty that comes from killing off favourite characters.

Yes, I am a fan of The Walking Dead (and GOT). Have been from the opening season. The zombie collective is fun, but I also like the story lines as we see how civilisation struggles to rebuild after a world ending catastrophe, as we follow one small band of depleting survivors. Look, something has to transition Rick and his meagre, completely bad-ass band from one zombie threat to the next. The pockets of civilisation gathering, trying to rebuild, the scavengers trying to survive and the abusers who profit at any and all costs. All common sense when considering how a country, once so determined by government, has to restore itself with far more personal ambitions in the founders.

Zombies might be the trend – even Jane Austin has had “Pride and Prejudice” remade as a zombie best seller, “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” … what else could it be called? – but this could have been based on a worldwide disease, meteor hitting the earth, or anything of such. Well, except this one has zombies. Zombies are like bacon. They make everything better.

And I have to thank the London Cycle Messenger Fund for this brilliant t-shirt. And this will t-shirt will definitely be on my shoulders in June for the Cannibal’s birthday.
