A new era of cyclists from another time

Barry Sandland/TIMB – The essential summer vacation

“We are from Dortmund. just across the German border, so it is about 700 kilometres here and back. We have panniers and everything, but they are at the place where we are staying.  We will do it in about two weeks. But we are on school holidays so we have plenty of time.”

Note: Colour me impressed. They seemed so nonchalant about it all. I thought the idea of teenagers travelling anywhere unescorted was a generation passed. They are 17 and 18 years old. Old enough, I know. But I still love the idea that they packed themselves up and did the ride.

I am so used to kids being ferried from home to school to clubs to practice to the mall. I really struggle w it. At the age off 12, I used to disappear from the house in the early morning, tell my parents nothing, and reappear in time for supper. .. Best days ever. And those days are gone.
