Preventing bike theft is like outrunning a bear

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – You only have to be less wanted than the bike next to you.

“The bike is a few decades old and I put it together with spare parts from here and there. It looks very old but there are advantages. Nobody steals a bike when it looks like this.”

Notes: There are reasons to own a really crappy looking bike – at least one that looks like it has seen better days. They are slightly safer from theft. Slightly. I have a run-around bike that cost me a penny and I can leave unattended for a longer period and still be pretty sure it will be there when I get out.

But this is akin to how you can outrun a bear. You do not have to be faster than the bear. You only have to be faster than the person next to you.
