When your father turns his back, take his bike

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – When faced with violence, chat about bicycles. It is more fun.

“The bike belongs to my father. Well, it belongs to me now. I don’t think he can ride it any more.”

Photographer’s notes: We were at the football violence, watching the spectacle from a distance – and staying safe. I have a small penchant for vintage bikes and this Scanini was beautiful. So I asked the obvious question.

“Did you steal that bike from your father or your grandfather?”

The perfect icebreaker. The chat moved on to classic road bikes and their aging owners. Then there were The Rules and the idea of middle-aged men in lycra.

I started to get a clearer idea why he liberated his father’s bike.
