Years later, when BMX racing regains its hold

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Covering the era, BMX remains a bike show favourite.

“I was doing racing from 1983-84 to 1995. From that I started doing dirt jumping and trail riding. Then, about six years ago, I thought I would get back into racing. I am really enjoying it. I am enjoying it more now as an adult than I ever did as a kid. There was not much conversion. If anything, the skills kind of cross over. The skills from dirt jumping help in the BMX racing. There are a lot of BMX riders who are coming here today just to do that because that is more our kind of thing.”

BMX has been a steadily evolving part of cycling. What was a fun bike to ride has become the preeminent stunt bike. From racing to street parcours to ramps and leaps, the bike has maintained its presence.
