Leaving the dirty bikes for someone else

There are races where cleaning bikes is the hardest job – well, next to the riders themselves.

I was joking with this man about the two pristine bikes he was taking over to the pit station and how they would not stay that way for too long.

“This is my day off, so someone else will have to clean them. Normally it is my job. But not today.”

Photographer’s notes: Alongside the pit lane, there is a section dedicated to cleaning bikes. A collection of high-pressure hoses that strip the mud from the bikes. They would get lots of use over the weekend, each lap soaking the bikes in another layer of mud. Each lap, as at least one rider would have to come in for a replacement, off would run one of the technicians with a bike alongside, cleaning the bike to get it race ready.
