Photographer’s notes: This has to be part of the bigger picture in cyclocross. All these riders heading pellmell into a mud slick. Whoever is behind, has to rely on the one in front staying upright. And then there is the dismount that breaks your rhythm, the slip that disrupts the ride.
Riders falling are simply part of racing in mud.
No wonder the starts are at rocket speed propulsion. No wonder everyone is hoping to get just one more bike behind them. At least a cyclist behind you has less opportunity to interfere with your ride.
