“I ride about 11 kilometres one way to get here, so I am nice and warm. And then the ride home after work. I used to do the car but the drivers are all so angry. Now I ride the bike and get to the office while I am warm.”
Photographer’s notes: A while back, I did some research and discovered riding your bike for 20 minutes can raise your core temperature by one degree. It lasts for a few hours. I used to ride eight kilometres to work at a nice, fast pace and then sit in an office, all day, in shorts. All winter long. In the winter, while everybody else had sweaters and scarves, I was in shorts and shirts. It was fantastic. Then I would ride home and be toasty warm the entire evening.
It is not such a surprise. Exercise increases your metabolism. A small amount gets you warm. A lot brings on sweat. Ride to work, get some warmth, and then enjoy the sensation for the next few hours. It really is nice.
