Barry Sandland – TIMB – Finding a community centre through Brixton Cycles

“I am the youngest member of the co-op, I think. I am 25 and have been here a little over two years now. I used to ride with two guys who used to work here. One of them still does. They put my name forward and I came down and introduced myself and I kind of fit in, I guess.

“It is an awesome, unique environment, a little unorthodox, but it works for us. We are like no other bike shop. We are not a hi-tech place and the like. We are like your bike shop. A hub where you gravitate and socialise and get your bike repaired. It is more a tight unit.”

Photographer’s notes: We are featuring Brixton Cycles, the longest standing co-operative bicycle shop in England. They are facing a ‘move or close’ scenario and have been crowdsourcing to raise the necessaries for the relocation. This Is My Bike has chipped in to the fund. If you are interested in contributing to the public support to keep Brixton Cycles active in their community, you can find their fundraising page here...

You might be impressed by the shaggy barb being fashioned in the image. Apparently he has put it on the block, threatening to shave it off if a £60,000 target is met. A dire sacrifice, indeed. If you are interested in losing the pre-hipster growth, make a donation… Hopefully they will post a video of the facial scalping.
