“Brixton Cycles is the longest standing cooperative bike shop in Britain. We are a community resource for the area. We store things used in the nearby BMX park; we lend out tools; give away second-hand parts for free; and we do ‘Women Only’ bike workshops. We give back a lot.
“I knew people who worked here and I was working at a large bike shop but was unhappy. I got fed up and my friend knew I was not happy and said I should come and work with them.
“That was in April 2004.”
Photographer’s notes: Living in Brussels, the idea of a cooperative bike shop seems almost second nature. Cyclo is, perhaps, the best known, but there are more and more small ateliers offering affordable service and parts to the country’s cycling community. Thy seem indispensable to creating a support structure for a real, wide based, democratic cycling community. A place where just about anyone can afford to get their bikes repaired.
So many shops in the UK have become private businesses and the cooperative shop has become harder and harder to find. Brixton Cycles has found they ave t move to a new location in the very near future and have launched a crowdfunding campaign to help defray the costs – costs that will inevitably be higher than expected. I mean, that is the nature of every move.

Last Minute Fundraising Effort
You might be impressed by the shaggy barb being fashioned in the image. Apparently he has put it on the block, threatening to shave it off if a £60,000 target is met. A dire sacrifice, indeed. If you are interested in losing the pre-hipster growth, make a donation… Hopefully they will post a video of the facial scalping.
