The great, powerful – and essential – student bike sale

Barry Sandland/TIMB - Student walking past second hand bike market sign with his new bike

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Steadily, over a few hours, about 100 bikes left the market to be with their new owners.

I came across a second-hand bike sale in the heart of Brussels this week. The student union organisation, Brik, that focuses on Flemish-speaking students, coordinated a massive bike market in an effort to get more students on bikes in Brussels. Over the next few days, we will feature the market and the surrounding events.

There were over 100 bikes brought to the event from a range of second-hand dealers, all the bikes in decent order, almost every one vintage. One by one, I saw the bikes leaving, alongside their new owner.

Even in cycling mad Belgium, bicycle advocacy is a daily essential to keep a pedal powered population. Students arrive and let their bikes with their parents, had the misfortune of having their ride stolen, or simply have not been cyclists – until now.
