“I have been a mechanic for almost 10 years now at bike ateliers. I would like to see a bike atelier in each of the city’s 19 communes. They are only in about 10. There are more and more old bikes being used every day that are in need of repair. Bike ateliers should be there to repair these bikes because often people do not have the money to go to bike shops. A mechanic there can cost about 40 Euros an hour now.”
Photographer’s notes: I have always been amazed, entertained and pleased by how Belgium has such a wide social infrastructure for just about everything. Food kitchens, creches, education, gardening, allotments… and then bike ventures. Cycling is less expensive than cars, certainly. But there can be a high cost for many families for simple repairs like punctures, replacing or adjusting brakes, and untrue wheels.
And, since Europe is obsessed with vintage bikes, there is a steady supply of bikes in need of repair.
