Returning to the bike after years in a car

“For a long time, I stopped riding a bike. This was a gift from my wife for Christmas. For years I used the car but now, essentially, I use the bike in the city. I think it is the fact I am older and am more aware of the benefits of exercise. That is the rationalisation. But it is really nice to be in the open air and it gives you a liberty of movement that is extraordinary.”

Photographer’s notes: Over the past couple of years, I have been trying to understand e-bikes. Sometimes I see them as distant alternatives, poor substitutes to ‘pure’ cycling. And then I come across other riders, like this man, who have found their way back to two wheels because there is this essential assistance for the to and from of city riding. The e-help supplements his pedalling, it is not a replacement. And if you could have been at this chat, the smile the man had when on his bike, how quick he was to start a conversation with another cyclist, his sense of humour …
