When art is greater than the bike

“I am just getting back from Place Jeu de Balle and I bought a painting. I had to take some care to carry it.”

Photographer’s notes: The rider had carried this painting all the way to his house via his bike. Just over two kilometres. It was a matter of holding it in his hand in order to pedal and get some momentum, then he would coast and rest the painting on his foot until the momentum died. It was not the sort of expedition that needed interruption by some guy with a camera asking for a story.

He found the painting at Place Jeu de Balles, probably the best known  flea market in Brussels. It has recently been rescued from pending extinction when local municipal government backtracked on their decision to create  a parking space under the Place. There are many in Brussels who have sighed a huge breath of relief, knowing their favourite market haunt will remain alive and well.
