Stopped by a simple rose

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – My local Cyclo bike shop has an air hose at the front door that is well used by area cyclists in need of a little floating support.

“The roses are for the house. Just routine. Every Saturday for Sunday. I bought the bike in Switzerland from a guy who was nice and he advised me. I have had it for four years now. It is a weekend bike for Brussels but it is not really flat here, so I do not use it for the trip to work. But I use it on Saturday and Sunday for shopping. Monday to Friday, I am not on the bike. I use the Metro.” Continue reading

Generations may pass but the quality remains

©Barry Sandland/TIMB - Look road frame converted to a fixed gear

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – A beautiful Look road frame converted into a fixed wheel ride.

“I found it on the net and I knew Look was a good brand. This was a cheap bike because the person who sold it, his friend was dead. It was kind of weird. I bought it and decided to ride it. It was really cool. It is a fixed gear and I was not used to riding with the bakes so I decided to take it off for the moment. I have the brake in my bag. If you are aware of what  is happening, people walking and all that, then you do not need brakes. But sometimes it is really useful.” Continue reading

Doing another city tour

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Caught at one of the locations where you can get a good line of sight of the city, a Dutch bike and rider enjoying a decent, winter, sunny day.

“I brought my bike in Brussels with me because I am visiting my daughter who is working here. I am intending to look at Brussels on my bike a little bit. I like to do that. I do not do it only with Brussels but with other places. Like Paris, for instance. And that is why I have my bike with me.”

Defining the essential limits

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Trains and Bromptons seem the natural combination. This one gets a daily ride of 36 kilometres.

“I am with the Ministry of Defence as a researcher in the field of rights for the public. For example, if the military is to be on the road, if they replace the police, what are their limits? Where can they go, what are they allowed to do?” Continue reading

Finding a lifestyle solution with a bike

©Barry Sandland/TIMB - Mother, with bicycle, considers what motivations brought her lifestyle change

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – It is always interesting to discuss what brings about a lifestyle change.

“I have a kid now and I want to take her to kindergarten by bike. We have too many cars in Brussels and it is crazy. But it is changed by us, little by little. It is a short daily trip. The trip to kindergarten is maybe seven minutes. It is a lot further when I use the car. It takes me 25 minutes to get to the European Parliament by bike. By public transport, with the transfers, it takes an hour. I am a photographer and when I have assignments in different parts of the city, I guess I will just ride there. This is the solution.” Continue reading
