My recuperated city bike

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – The traditional city bike. Vintage, fenders, panniers. All the necessaries to get back and forth with the daily load.

“It is a recuperated bike. I wanted something for the city. Before I had a mountain bike, but it was not always practical and I preferred a city bike. I always have the small panniers and the backpack and this is easier on my back.”

Photographer’s notes:  City bikes are rife in Belgium. Riders sit high on the bike, upright and visible. Plus, they have a wide field of vision. Panniers or baskets are constant, and they serve as a constant indication that this is a frequent rider. Commuters often like the upright position. Chatting with this rider, her previous mountain bike left her in a leaning position and gave her some back problems when carrying her daily load in her back pack. Upright, the weight is easier for her. The bike is a vintage Peugeot – a real classic that harks back a few decades.
