Oh, Saint Nicolas and his messengers

©Barry Sandland/TIMB – Foul weather and still two wheels. I still think bike messengers are the toughest of the lot. The rest of us, when faced with foul weather, can opt for a car, hide under a shelter, until the worst has passed. The bike messenger is the guy who ignores it al.

“I had to transport the costume of Saint Nicolas the other day – you know this guy, with the grey beard who brings all the stuff? – the beard and all, with the two meter long, golden crook.”

Yes, they have a website: http://www.pedalbxl.com/

Photographer’s notes: If you are looking for a bike and rider in foul weather, count on the bicycle messengers. This service started in 2009. It is part of a city to have these two-wheeled express riders stripping through the streets. My one regret is, I did not photograph his phone. An aside, but I was struck how it was weather, water-proofed and seemed so rugged. .. probably just the case.

Oh.. and this is Belgium. There is a Santa Claus, but, on the eve of December 5, there is Saint Nicolas where gifts are given. This is the Dutch celebration and every school, workplace, hospital is visited. Santa comes on Christmas Eve, but he is not the guy who visits Belgium homes.as an actual presence. That is Saint Nicolas. You can read more here… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinterklaas
